My training plan called for 10 miles @ 11:15. I left my house at 7am expecting that to be early enough to avoid the heat. WRONG. It wasn't that hot – 71 degrees but the humidity was 92% and the sun was shining the entire time. I took along my 16 oz hand held water bottle and 1 packet of GU.
Unfortunately I had another hard long run. I’m sure it has to do with the heat & humidity. It was better then last week but I still felt a little defeated at the end. I ran out 5 miles and turned around. The 2nd half was easier and faster then the first – go figure.
I learned a few things on this run:
- I need to start running earlier. 7am doesn't cut it in the middle of one of the hottest summers in upstate NY. I’m thinking 5am next Saturday which means I will wake up earlier on Saturday then I do the rest of the week for work! Booooo
- My 16oz hand held water bottle is not enough water. Not only was it warm by the half way point it was almost empty. I had enough to take my gu but I also had to run 2 miles before I could refill.
- A bottle of water cost more then $1. I had the smarts to bring money with me on this run but didn’t take into consideration that you cant really buy anything for a $1. I stopped in 2 gas stations before I met a kind man that let me purchase a $1.19 bottle of water for $1. I think he felt bad for me and wanted my sweaty smelly ass out of his store.
- I need to fuel better. I only brought 1 packet of gu. Normally this would have been enough but not in this heat/humidity. I am a very salty sweater and need to figure out how to fuel so I don't get cramps in my legs.
- Running longer then 1.5 hours by yourself truly SUCKS. I had put a plea on Facebook for someone to run with me but most of my friends run on sunday. I like getting long runs done on saturday but I may change my tune soon so I can have company!
- Eminem's new cd is perfect running music
Does anyone run with a camelbak? What do you love/hate about it? I have a hydration belt but I didn't like it at all so I’m researching other options.

Awesome job on your 10 miler! I hear you on the heat. It is NOT an easy task. Bring more money so on your turn around you can buy water and juts refill your pack. I have never run with a camelbak but I haven't heard great things about them.
ReplyDeletegreat job!
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome run, especially in the heat! It gets to me too. I haven't run with a cambelbak but I have friends who do and they love them. It's probably a matter of preference.
ReplyDeleteConsidering the heat and humidity we've had lately I think you did amazingly well!! I wish I could still do my long runs on Sat. You should change to Sunday...there seem to be quite a few people who run Sunday mornings (ME INCLUDED!!).
ReplyDeletesounds like an earlier run would be best for you. luckily, DC will be the perfect running temp in Ocotber but for now, yes, its tough! i'd run with you if we lived near each other! what about running 8 miles on your owna nd having a friend join u for the last 5 or so?
ReplyDeleteWhen I trained for my marathon, I used to stash bottles of frozen water or gatorade along the route. The drinks would be mostly thawed by the time I got to them (5-6 miles in or so, depending on the run).
ReplyDeleteGreat job in this heat, though. Really!
Here's review of a belt that another blogger wrote: http://quadrathon.blogspot.com/2010/07/review-nathan-x-trainer-mutation.html
ReplyDeletewhich belt do you have? Do you think you can adjust it to make it more comfortable?
ReplyDeleteYou probably need to bring water and electrolyte drink.
ReplyDeleteI have always run with my Camelbak...no matter the distance. I wish it wouldn't slosh around so much and I do have to watch the sternum strap so it doesn't contribute to the hot-nipple syndrome, but overall I much prefer it to holding onto my water.
ReplyDeleteThe only time I've used a camelback was on a bike and I loved it. Not sure about running though!
ReplyDeleteYou are SUCH an inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI have a four mini bottle running belt and it's fantastic. I live in Australia and cold water is a must on a run. I freeze my water bottles and the heat from my body slowly thaws them while running. That way i always have icey cold water on a hot day.
