My only goal for this race was to beat last years time of 1:00:55 (12:11 pace). I knew I had it in the bag – the question was by how much could I crush it.
I won’t leave you in suspense. According to my garmin I finished 5.02 miles in 47:36! (Race results show 48:00 but it wasn’t chipped timed). I beat my time by 13 minutes!
- Mile 1- 9:28
- Mie 2 – 9:19
- Mile 3 – 9:33
- Mile 4 – 9:44
- Mile 5 – 9:22
- Average pace: 9:29!
I was pushing myself hard the entire time. I started doubting that I would be able to keep the pace up but I quickly pushed the negative thoughts out of my head. The interesting thing about this race was that I was always running with people around me. Last year I ran with 1 other woman and we were alone for most of the race. Being in the middle of the crowd really helped to keep me pushing.
As you can see Mile 4 I really started to feel it. I allowed myself to slow down a little bit. I came up from behind this one guy and apologized for the heavy breathing lol. We kept leap frogging each other and encouraging each other. With half a mile to go the guy took off and I tried to keep up but I didn't have anything left.
I was so pleased with my performance. I hoped to finish in 50 minutes so this was icing on the cake! I realized I had another 5 miles to run and I was dreading it. I hung around to cheer on some friends but I couldn't put off the rest of my run any longer. In hindsight, I should have sucked it up and immediately started running the additional 5. The 40 minute gap between was killer.
I drove to my favorite park. The second I started to run I knew I was in for it. My legs felt like lead. I turned up the music and re-lived the race in my head. My legs started to get crampy and I hate that feeling. I stopped a few times to stretch them out.
- Mile 6 - 10:37
- Mile 7 – 10:41
- Mile 8 – 10:26
- Mile 9 – 10:43
- Mile 10 – 11:18
- .32 – 10:48
- Average Pace: 10:44
Total miles for the day: 10.32 Total time: 1:44:44 Total Pace: 10:08
Overall it was a great run. This is my last long run before the MORE 1/2 Marathon on 4/25! I can’t believe I’m going to run my 3rd half marathon.
Some pictures from the race. I don’t think I look much different then picture from last year?
What do you think?
Today is the last day to vote!!!

ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
awesome improvement and a great job! CONGRATULATIONS!!! Keep it up, girl!
ReplyDeleteWOOHOOO That's a fantastic improvement, good for you. I did that (race and a long run - http://heidi-v.blogspot.com/2010/03/race-and-long-run.html) a couple months ago too. 5 mile race then 7 mile run home. Waited around a bit in between too and that was KILLER! I think it's easier to just keep going than to stop in between. But it makes for a wicked mental challenge and I think it has huge benefits.
ReplyDeleteGrrrrrreat job! We missed you yesterday but I'm so happy that you had an awesome race and an overall really good long run!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the great race!
ReplyDelete"I apologized for the heavy breathing." LOL! That cracked me up. Way to kill the race and then knock out another 5 afterward!
ReplyDeleteThat's super! We missed you yesterday!
ReplyDeleteCrushed and obliterated...awesome! It is difficult to imaging myself getting through a 5 mile race only to take on another 5 on my own 40 minutes afterward. You continue to inspire!
ReplyDeleteGreat job. I always find it easier to run before the race when I have to tack on a few extra miles. Starting up afterwards seems impossible at times.
ReplyDeleteAmanda - that is so exciting!! YOU CRUSHED IT!!!!!!!
